2020 vision: Tom Ford looks back to the ’50s and ’70s

American designer Tom Ford set tongues wagging with his SS20 menswear range, which featured — controversially — long johns as outerwear. While the inspiration for that choice might seem murky, the motivation for Ford’s SS20 eyewear range is much clearer: His vision for the warmer months of 2020 are inspired by the rocking 1950s and 1970s.

The designer takes a bigger-is-better approach, with oversized silhouettes and well-defined shapes that hark back to two of the coolest decades that still inspire fashion trends.

The models make a statement in combinations of a variety of precious materials, which create unique designs that immediately evoke the brand. Present among the styles are iconic details and concepts, such as the metal “T” logo housed on frame fronts and the infinity shape. With the all-new Blue Block lenses, the ready-to-wear eyeglasses meet the needs of those who want to accessorise their look with a stand-out piece, but don’t need corrective lenses.

Back to the talking point of the season, the trousers that was first assumed to be yoga pants. Of it, the press release says: “Long underwear in abstract camouflage prints is worn as casualwear and replaces the training pant this season.”

If Tom Ford has his way, you’re going to stand out in more ways than one this season.
